The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, is among the first laureates of the European Order of Merit, and the awarding ceremony will take place on May 19 in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Among the laureates of the first edition of the European Order of Merit are Angela Merkel, former chancellor of Germany, Lech Wałęsa, former president of Poland, Jerzy Buzek, former prime minister of Poland and former president of the European Parliament, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, former president and prime minister of Portugal, Maia Sandu, president of the Republic of Moldova, Wolfgang Schüssel, former chancellor of Austria, Javier Solana or Jean-Claude Trichet, former president of the European Central Bank, according to the officials of the European Parliament.
First event
During the ceremony organized on May 19 in the European Parliament, the laureates will receive the European Order of Merit, which is offered in ,,mark of recognition of their important contribution to iEuropean integration and to the promotion and defense of values European”.
Last year, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the Bureau of the European Parliament decided to establish the first European award of its kind awarded by an EU institution. And each year, a maximum of 20 laureates can be nominated.
