A puzzling train accident in Russia. Two meters of tracks disappeared from the route

“According to initial reports, the cause of the accident was the lack of a track over a length of approximately two meters,” the governor wrote on Telegram. He added that the driver was forced to apply emergency braking, but he was unable to prevent half of the wagon from derailing. There were 15 people on the train at the time of the accident. “All emergency services are working at the scene of the incident, including sapper specialists from the Russian Ministry of Defense. The circumstances of the incident and information about the victims are being established,” Gladkov noted. Initially, the regional governor wrote that the lack of track “could have been caused by the detonation of an explosive charge.” He later removed this piece of text, stating that the rails had disappeared due to unspecified “damage.”

Mysterious accidents involving trains

Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, there have been several train bombings in Russia. For example, in the summer of 2025, in the Bryansk Oblast, a bridge collapsed onto a passenger train, killing seven people and injuring over 100. In the Kursk Oblast, a railway crossing collapsed onto a road with a passing freight train, injuring the driver and two of his assistants. Moreover, in June last year, train bombings took place in the Voronezh and Belgorod regions.

In mid-September, two diesel locomotives derailed in the Leningrad Oblast, killing the driver. An explosion occurred in the Oryol Oblast during a track inspection, killing two people. Another explosion occurred on tracks in the Pskov region. At the beginning of April this year, seven cars of a passenger train traveling from Chelyabinsk to Moscow derailed in the Ulyanovsk region. The train had 15 wagons and carried 415 passengers. Many people were injured. The Investigative Committee indicated the poor technical condition of the tracks as the cause of the incident.
