Bonnie Tyler was “resuscitated after suffering a cardiac arrest” when doctors tried to bring her out of the induced coma, according to British media.

The Welsh singer will remain in an induced coma in an intensive care unit at the Portuguese Hospital in Faro until doctors manage to get her under control “serious infection” from which he suffers, caused by an intestinal perforation, writes the Mirror.

Liberto Mealha, a friend of the artist, stated that the doctors are “confident” that he will fully recover, despite the uncertainty that still hangs over the evolution of the situation.

More details have come to light in recent days about Bonnie's health issues, which apparently led to the emergency bowel surgery and appendix removal. Mealha, who met the “The Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer when he opened a popular nightclub in Albufeira in the 1980s near the artist's holiday home, said last week:He started feeling sick during a concert in London and went to a doctor for tests, but nothing was found there. She decided to go to the Algarve, where she began to experience severe abdominal pain. Two days later, she presented herself at a private hospital, which rushed her to the hospital in Faro because her appendix had burst and she needed emergency surgery.”

A spokesperson for the singer said Bonnie had been induced into a coma to “aid her recovery” after it was reported she had suffered a ruptured appendix.

The day before, when the first signs of health problems appeared, the spokesman had declared: “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to a hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a residence, for emergency bowel surgery. The operation went well and she is now recovering. We know all of her family, friends and fans will be worried by this news and wish her a full and speedy recovery.”

Sources say she continued to work in the run-up to her hospitalisation, despite complaining of persistent pain for several weeks. Her representatives have yet to comment on reports that she had to be resuscitated after suffering a cardiac arrest.

Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping blood, causing the heart to stop beating and the flow of oxygen to the body and brain.

This causes immediate loss of consciousness and collapse. To prevent death, it is essential to intervene immediately by starting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using a defibrillator, if available.

Mealha, whose daughter is Bonnie's niece, said last week that the singer's husband spends his days by her hospital bed and only leaves at night to sleep at home. He added: “He is very grateful to the doctors and nurses at Faro hospital and believes that if Bonnie had stayed in the UK, she would not be alive.”
