On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the third acquisition of the head of John the Baptist, or John the Baptist.
In Rus', it was believed that from this day, “copper dew” appeared on plants – sweet discharge of aphids and worms that feed on plant juices. They said about them: “Honey dew knows rusts, sweetly creeps and painfully eats away.” It was believed that such “dew” cause harm to children, cattle, and plants.
At the same time, strong dew on this day – real, and not “copper” – foreshadowed a good harvest. “Without dew and grass does not grow,” they said that about this. They paid attention to other signs. If there were many flowers on the mountain ash on this day, they waited for oats, but the late heyday of the mountain ash promised a long autumn.
