It seems that the larger and brighter the berry, the juicier and tastier it is – alas, but this is not so. Often all the “steam” goes into the perfect color, but the taste remains somewhere in 10th place. But there are 3 life hacks that will help you always choose tasty and sweet berries, expert Dmitry Zmievsky shared them.
Life hacks for choosing delicious strawberries
First of all, pay attention to the smell. If it is weak, then the taste is so-so, but if it is rich, then it is a real strawberry. By the way, the smell of the berries should be felt even through the packaging.
The second life hack is green and fresh ponytails. If they are dry and drooping, don’t even dream about the freshness of the berries.
And finally, the third life hack is imperfect berries. If they are equally large and symmetrical, it is better to avoid them.
Of course, these tips will come in handy if you are buying out-of-season strawberries. In the spring, greenhouse or imported varieties are sold – these berries are picked before they gain flavor. The most delicious and affordable berries appear in June and July, when the harvest is brought from the central regions of the country.
Important: be careful when buying strawberries at the market. Many sellers are tricky – for example, they put spoiled berries at the bottom of the containers, refusing to pour them into your own container, or they do not allow you to touch and examine the strawberries, because they have rot, dents and damage. Such sellers do not have quality certificates; their berries are often treated with chemicals that can lead to poisoning.
What to do if you make a wrong choice
Even tasteless strawberries can be used. For example, try making compote from it: sugar and lemon will correct the taste and make the drink bright and rich.
You can make jam from the berries by adding sugar and a gelling thickener. You can cook it in a saucepan, stirring constantly, or, which is much more convenient, in a bread maker.
