The European Union is considering the possibility of potential negotiations with the illegitimate president of the aggressor country of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin. This was announced by the head of the European Council, António Costa, who was quoted by the Financial Times on May 7.
The EU does not yet see signs of Moscow’s readiness for a real dialogue, however, according to Costa, it is holding consultations with the leaders of 27 EU countries to determine the format of possible interaction with Russia in the future.
This comes amid growing frustration with the progress of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, which US President Donald Trump is now pushing.
Costa stressed that the EU has the support of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky regarding the participation of the European side in potential negotiations.
At the same time, he noted that the European Union does not intend to interfere with the negotiation process initiated by the United States, but admitted that progress in the negotiations remains limited.
Brussels is also discussing the idea of appointing a single European representative for contacts with Moscow, but there is no consensus among EU member countries on the format of such negotiations.
Separately, it is reported that Ukraine is in constant contact with the United States and European partners on the issue of possible diplomatic contacts with the Russian side.
