Folk calendar
Pavlov's day
The day got its name in honor of a church holiday – the day of remembrance of St. Paul of Thebes. He is also called Paul of Egypt or Paul the Hermit. It is believed that Paul of Thebes was the first Christian monk.
Among the people, this day received another name – the Day of Sorcerers. People believed that on this day sorcerers and witches could pass on their art to their students. This was fraught with various troubles for those around him – after all, the students needed to test their acquired abilities.
On Pavlov's day they advised to beware of damage and the evil eye. To achieve this, “protective measures” were taken—both those approved by the church and those close to pagan rituals. On St. Paul's Day, people often prayed, knocked on wood, and spat over their shoulders.
Regarding natural phenomena they said: “Paul added to the day,” “Paul got wet and dragged on the day,” noting that winter was already steadily moving towards its end, the nights were becoming shorter, and the sun was getting brighter. We also monitored the weather. Brilliant stars on this day foreshadow frost, dim ones – warmth, and “blinking” ones – a blizzard. If clouds appear in the north, you should not hope for a thaw.
Also, according to Pavlov’s day, they looked at what the summer would be like: if it’s clear, then dry and hot, if it’s windy, then cold, if it’s snowing, then rainy. Calm, cloudy weather was considered ideal.
