The US State Department has approved the possible sale of Joint Direct Attack Munitions – Extended Range (JDAM-ER) precision aircraft munitions and related systems and services to Ukraine for a total amount of about $373.6 million, according to a message on the official website of the US government dated May 5.
The statement indicated that Ukraine has submitted a request to purchase 1,200 KMU-572 tail sets and 332 KMU-556 tail sets for JDAM systems. The package also includes FMU-139 fuzes, maintenance equipment, spare parts, software, technical documentation, logistics and engineering support.
The State Department emphasized that this sale will help achieve US foreign policy and defense goals and strengthen the security of Ukraine, which is called “the driving force of political stability and economic progress in Europe.”
“The proposed sale will improve Ukraine's ability to counter current and future threats by further equipping it for self-defense and regional security missions with more powerful air defense capabilities. Ukraine will have no difficulty integrating these goods and services into its Armed Forces,” the statement said.
The main contractor is to be The Boeing Company (St. Louis, Missouri), the State Department reports.
It is also noted that the implementation of this agreement will not have a negative impact on the combat readiness of the US armed forces.
This decision by the State Department must still be reviewed by the US Congress. If there are no objections, the parties will be able to proceed to the conclusion of the contract and further deliveries.
