John Malkovich, European citizen. The country that offered the passport to the actor with Romanian genes

John Malkovich, 72, became a Croatian citizen in an official ceremony on Tuesday. Recently, the American actor revealed that, following a DNA test, he discovered that he has Romanian origins, according to France 24.
The announcement was made by Croatian Minister Davor Bozinovic, who said on X that “the world-renowned actor, who marked the cinema with numerous roles, has taken on a new role and has become a Croatian citizen”.
John Malkovich was received in Croatia with honors by Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic. “John's long career and artistic success are a great source of inspiration for younger generations and we are glad that he is proudly cultivating his Croatian roots,” said the Prime Minister.
Born on December 9, 1953 in Christopher, Illinois, Malkovich's grandparents were originally from Ozalj, Croatia, and immigrated to the United States. On the part of his maternal family, the actor has English, French, German and Scottish origins.
In 2025, the actor revealed that he found out, following a DNA test, that he is 43% Romanian and the rest Czech.
John Malkovich is one of the most famous actors in Hollywood. Among his legendary roles are those in “In the Line of Fire”, “Being John Malkovich” or “Burn After Reading”. Last year, he played the role of the mature Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache, in the movie “Yellow Tie”.
