Five of the largest TV news stations in the United States-ABC News, CBS News, CNN, Fox News and NBC News-announced in a joint statement published on Tuesday that I do not agree with the new rules for war, Pete Hegseth, are trying to impose accredited reporters near Pentagon.
The Department of the War led by Hegseth, a former Fox News journalist, threatened in September that he will revoke the media organizations that do not accept that the information he publishes about being officially approved.
A memory of the Pentagon stated that “the information must be approved for publication by an authorized official before being broadcast, even if they are not classified”, which means, practically, the prohibition of the use of materials from anonymous sources. The restriction applies to both classified and “non -classified, but controlled” information.
The memory also introduces extended limitations on areas in the Pentagon headquarters where journalists can go without accompanying an official. “The press does not lead the Pentagon-people do it,” he wrote in a message published on the “X” Hegseth network, whose title was changed from the Secretary of Defense in the War At the beginning of September, with the renaming of the department he runs.
More than 30 US press organizations had already announced that they refused their reporters to sign the written commitments required by Pentagon, who had set for Tuesday, October 14, the deadline for their submission.
TV networks denounce an “unprecedented” policy of the Pentagon
“Today, we are practically joining all the other media organizations in refusing to accept the new requirements of the Pentagon, which would restrict the ability of journalists to inform the nation and the world about important national security issues,” the TV networks said in the common statement issued on Tuesday.
“This policy is unprecedented and threatens the fundamental protections of journalism. We will continue to tell about the United States army, as each of our organizations has been doing for decades, respecting the principles of free and independent press,” he continued.
The five posts join newspapers and press agencies such as The New York Times, Associated Press, Reuters, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and politicalbut also publications with conservative orientation as Fox News, Newsmax and The Washington Examiner.
“Pete Hegseth has managed to unite the press! Fox joins the other traditional media institutions in opposition to its radical press policy,” wrote Chuck Todd, the former presenter of the show Meet the press from NBC, currently host of podcast The Chuck Toddcastin a message distributed on the “X” network.
Only one television station announced that they intend to sign the new rules imposed by Pentagon: Pro-Trump network One America News Network (Oann).
