Massacre in a yard in Slatina. Seven animals killed in front of their owners: “It's the second time”

Seven animals were killed in a yard in the municipality of Slatina, on Grădiște Street. People complain of an attack by stray dogs, while representatives of the capture service say that it is the owners who make it difficult to collect street strays.
The alleged attack by Maidan dogs (there is already a controversy whether the attack was caused by dogs or jackals) in the yard on Grădiște Street, an area on the outskirts of Slatina, took place on the night of May 3/4, 2026. In the morning, the owner found seven animals – six sheep and a piglet – killed. He called 112, as well as the service for catching stray dogs, and the police officers from Animal Protection and the representatives of the dog owners arrived on the scene. In the end, the police applied the maximum fine – 100 lei – to the service for catching stray dogs.
“I'm all over the street, the kids can't get out”
The victim's daughter told “Adevărul” that it would not be the first full-scale attack. And a neighbor would have lost several animals in the same way, and the residents of the area blame these attacks on packs of abandoned dogs.
“They bring them from the city and leave them here. And the Hungarians aren't coming to get them. They killed animals, but it could be a child. The street is full of dogs. Believe me, I have footage of six dogs at a neighbor's uninhabited yard from here! God forbid, if they kill a child?!”, said Sabrina Banica. The woman also says that one of the henchmen at the scene allegedly also offended the caller, reproaching him for notifying the police.
“Every time we go to capture we argue with people”
The director of the Urban Development company, which also has the service for capturing stray dogs, Andrei Bălan, says that from his experience it doesn't seem like there was an attack by Maidan dogs, but “most likely, a jackal that entered the yard and killed their animals.”

“There is no proof either that they were killed by dogs or that there was a jackal. What I can tell you is that we have had repeated campaigns to gather dogs from the Grădiște area and from the entire lower city area. The moment the colleagues go to capture, people put them in the yards. In fact, it is their dogs that they let loose on the street, pack and cause trouble. We know the problem there, from the neighborhood below, every time we go to capture we argue with people – Don't take that one because it's mine, don't take that one because it's the neighbor's! -, quickly put them in the yard. It's a problem of civilization there, not just of dogs”stated Andrei Bălann, for “Adevărul”.
The head of Urban Development also says that the Hingers go to the area to capture maidans, both during reports and as part of planned actions.
“We will probably order some more extensive measures, capture intensively and also request the support of the Animal Police, when they take them to the courts to apply a sanction (n. ed. – based on the law that obliges animal owners to microchip and sterilize them), because I don't see any other solution. And this happens in most areas of houses. We don't really have any new problems with stray dogs in block areas”Balan also said.
Beyond the difficulty of capturing dogs in the area, the service has another problem: limited hosting capacity. The shelter in Slatina has a capacity of 160 places, which prove to be insufficient. The plan is to increase the capacity by 60 places, but until then it will continue to call on the NGOs that help the town hall and take from the captured animals, so that the animals are not euthanized.
Only 160 places in the shelter
IPJ Olt, on the other hand, confirmed that the Urban Development company was fined in this case.
“On May 4th, at around 08:30, the Olt County Police Inspectorate was notified, by calling 112, by a man from the municipality of Slatina, regarding the fact that several stray dogs had allegedly killed approximately 80 of his sheep. Police officers from the Animal Protection Bureau went to the scene.
Following the checks carried out, the police fined the commercial company that administers the management service for stray dogs in the municipality of Slatina, for non-compliance with the provisions of art. 18, para. 1, lit. a) from GEO no. 55/2002 regarding the keeping regime of dangerous or aggressive dogs, respectively for the failure to take measures to prevent canine attack by the owner or temporary keeper of the dog, an act which resulted in the killing of some domestic animals”the police said.
