Russian grocery chains experienced a drop in traffic for the first time since the pandemic

Russia's largest grocery chains are faced with a noticeable cooling in demand. According to RBC, sales growth slowed in the first quarter, and store traffic stopped growing for the first time since the pandemic.
According to analysts, this is due to changes in consumer behavior: Russians began to go to stores less often and plan their purchases more carefully.
The aggregate figure fell to 11.8% compared to 16.9% a year earlier. These estimates are provided by Infoline based on IFRS reporting.

The slowdown affected almost the entire market: eight of the ten largest chains reduced their growth rates (excluding Fix Price). Against this background, only a few players were able to maintain or improve their performance.
Lenta remains the leader, increasing revenue by 23.4% to RUB 306.9 billion. without VAT. The company actually maintained last year's pace (23.2%), which analysts attribute to active investments and network expansion.
The Samokat service also showed acceleration. The growth was 12.2% versus 9.9% a year earlier, revenue reached 68.1 billion rubles.
Major players showed weaker results. X5 increased revenue by 11.3%, to 1.2 trillion rubles, while Magnit, according to Infoline, by 13%, to 910.5 billion rubles. By comparison, in the first quarter of 2025, growth was 20.7% and 14.1%, respectively.
