Lawyers for 83-year-old Serbian war criminal Ratko Mladic, sentenced to life, have filed a petition for his release because, according to the defense, he is dying. According to the BBC, the lawyers filed the application at the tribunal meeting on May 1.
The defense motion notes that Mladic has been bedridden for a long time and can only move in a wheelchair.
The defense said two doctors assessed his condition as serious, “with a high risk of imminent death.” In this regard, he is asked to be released immediately, moving to a hospital or hospice where Serbian is spoken.
As the publication notes, this remark implies that Mladic’s defense is seeking his return to Serbia.
Judge Graciela Gatti Santana asked for an independent assessment of Mladic's health.
