Hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah continue despite the ceasefire. At least 13 people killed in IDF shelling in southern Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched airstrikes on several areas of southern Lebanon on Saturday, and local authorities say they killed at least 13 people, according to AFP and the BBC.

At Haboush, in the Nabatieh district, where the IDF had issued evacuation orders, eight people were killed, including two women and a child.

In Zrarieh, in Sidon district, four people were killed, including two women. Another person was killed in Ain Baal in Tire district.

Hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iranian-aligned Lebanese Shiite militia, continued despite the ceasefire agreed by Israel and Lebanon.

On Friday night, Hezbollah launched at least four drones over northern Israel, according to The Times of Israel. On Saturday, the IDF announced it had intercepted a rocket fired by Hezbollah at Israeli soldiers stationed in southern Lebanon, while several other explosive-laden rockets and drones exploded near Israeli troops.

Armistice after talks between Israel and Lebanon

Initially, on April 16, after talks between the ambassadors of Israel and Lebanon in Washington, a 10-day ceasefire was announced. The two countries do not have diplomatic relations, and the meeting in the US capital was their first high-level meeting since 1993.

On April 23, US President Donald Trump announced a three-week extension of the ceasefire agreement, saying that a second meeting between representatives of the two states “went very well” and that the US would work with Lebanon “to help protect itself from Hezbollah”.

The Iran-backed organization was not involved in the cease-fire agreement, but has signaled it will abide by the deal's terms if Israel does.

Although the ceasefire agreement has largely halted attacks on the Lebanese capital Beirut and its southern suburbs, conflict has persisted in areas of southern Lebanon, with constant air raids and repeated evacuation orders.
