Donald Trump was accused of “betraying” former US president Barack Obama on Tuesday and asked for his criminal prosecution due to a report that claims that officials from the Democratic Administration have manipulated Russia interference in 2016 elections, AFP reports.

The director of the National Intelligence Services (DNI) in the US, Tulsi Gabbard, sent to the Department of Justice Criminal Notifications related to a report published on Friday, who claimed that Obama officials were part of a “treacherous conspiracy”.

Gabbard claimed that Obama and his team made information on a Russian interference in elections to “lay the foundations of what was, in essence, a coup for years against President Trump.”

Its report contradicts the evidence accumulated in four separate investigations from 2019-2023, all concluding that Russia intervened in favor of Trump in the 2016 elections.

Trump accuses Obama of “betrayal”

During a press conference in the Oval Office, where he received a visit to Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, Donald Trump was asked who should concern the department in relation to the report.

“Based on what I read-and I read what you read-would be President Obama. He started it,” said the current US president, who had been criticized on Monday because he distributed a video generated by artificial intelligence with Obama's arrest.

Trump also mentioned the then Vice-President of Obama, Joe Biden, former director of FBI James Comey, former director of DNI James Clappe and former director of CIA John Brennan, as part of a conspiracy.

However, the Republican claims that the “leader of the band” was Obama, who accused of being guilty of “betrayal”.

Ever since the launch of various investigations on Russia's interference in the 2016 American elections, Donald Trump has rejected them as “a witch hunt.”

A bipartisan report of the Senate Intelligence Committee – headed by the interim president, Marco Rubio, now Secretary of State in the Trump Administration – found in 2020 that Donald Trump's campaign team sought to “maximize” the leak of democratic documents stolen by Russian services.
