Tensions at the top of Defense: Miruță assumes “the most modern weapon in the world”, after initially opposing the project

The Minister of Defense, Radu Miruță, is accused of double talk after publicly praising the project regarding the development of “the most modern assault weapon in the world”, when, according to some sources, he would have initially opposed the project of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Sources from within the system claim that, in previous meetings, Minister Radu Miruță and part of his team would have opposed the MAI project on the development of “the most modern assault weapons in the world”trying to block its implementation.

According to the same sources, the change of speech would have appeared only after the initiative received the green light and entered an advanced phase of approval, according to news reports.

“This project is under the authority of the MAI, which must come to this Commission, as we came today. This weapon is under discussion to be made at Cugir, at the weapons factory, and the ammunition associated with this contract to be produced at Sadu, because that is where the specific characteristics are.” said the Minister of Defense.

The project aims to produce an assault weapon at the Cugir factory, while the ammunition would be made at Sadu, depending on technical specifications. The system would not be intended exclusively for the Romanian Army, but also for other structures in the field of security, such as MAI, SRI or SPP.

“It isit's about a bigger package: assault weapon, pistol, of various calibers”, said Miruta.

At the same time, the official specified that the new weapon will not be intended exclusively for the Army: “MApN will use it, part of the order. The rest of the piece will be used by MAI, SPP, SRI.”

The minister also insisted on the importance of the SAFE program for the national economy and industry: “The major achievement today is that after so many months of work around this SAFE program, we were able to protect the delivery of this program even in this political chaos.”

The SAFE program, funded at the European level, allocates approximately 16.68 billion euros to Romania for defense and infrastructure projects, of which over 8 billion are already included in a first package analyzed by the Parliament. The financial terms provide for long repayment terms of up to 45 years and a grace period of 10 years.
