Advisor to the Russian leader, Yuri Ushakov, announced that the presidents of the United States and Russia, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, had a telephone conversation lasting over an hour and a half on Wednesday. He added that the topics discussed were Iran, a possible truce in the war with Ukraine and possible economic and energy projects.

Putin proposed a ceasefire in the fighting in Ukraine during Victory Day, to which Trump responded favorably, Ushakov said, quoted by Reuters.

In Russia, Victory Day is celebrated on May 9. The holiday commemorates the victory of Stalin's USSR over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War, as Moscow calls the part of World War II in which the USSR fought on the side of the anti-Hitler coalition (1941-45).

Putin's foreign policy adviser added that Trump believes an agreement to end the war in Ukraine is imminent.

Putin expressed support for Trump's decision to extend the truce in the war with Iran, Ushakov reported. He noted that the conversation paid particular attention to the situation in Iran and the Persian Gulf.

During the conversation, Putin also condemned the attempted assassination of Trump, Ushakov added. (PAP)
