The political crisis in Romania, in the international press: “The former ruling party joins the efforts of the extreme right to dismiss the prime minister”

The decision of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) to initiate a no-confidence motion alongside the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) was analyzed by the international press, which wrote that the current political crisis in Bucharest endangers the country's access to EU funds, sovereign ratings and debt yields, according to News.ro.

Reuters reported that PSD and AUR's attempt to dismiss the pro-European coalition government, which also included social democrats, threatens Romania's European funding.

Bolojan, a follower of reforms, refused to resign and said that the Government has to implement vital reforms in order to access funds from the PNRR worth more than 10 billion euros, before the deadline set by the European Union for August, the news agency also wrote.

The publication noted that the PSD-PNL-USR-UDMR government had been formed with the aim of limiting the electoral gains of a group of far-right parties, but the liberal prime minister and the social democrats had repeated disagreements on the budget cuts needed to reduce the largest deficit in the EU, which fell from over 9% in 2024 to 6.2% this year.

Last but not least, Reuters stated that the PSD expressed its readiness to continue being part of the pro-European coalition, but with a different prime minister. PNL stood by Ilie Bolojan, accusing the social democrats of violating the protocol signed 10 months ago.

The publication also talked about the arithmetic in the Parliament, where the censure motion needs at least 232 votes to lead to the dismissal of the Government.

What other publications have written

The former ruling party in Romania joins the efforts of the extreme right to dismiss the prime minister, was the headline from Bloomberg.

The publication wrote that the motion announced on Monday by PSD and AUR marks a dramatic escalation of tensions between the former governing allies, as well as that the approach has a high chance of success if it reaches the vote.

Bloomberg noted that PSD accused Bolojan of pursuing an austerity policy.

The political crisis in Bucharest was also addressed by Politico, which described PSD and AUR as the most popular parties in the country and talked about the steps taken by the two formations to dismiss Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.

Politico sees a possible PSD-AUR majority after the next election

According to the publication, AUR is leading in the polls and could obtain a parliamentary majority alongside PSD in the next general elections.

Politico quoted Ciprian Ciucu, mayor of the capital and first vice-president of the PNL, who accused the social democrats of irresponsibility and said that the liberals will no longer enter a coalition with the PSD. The criticisms launched by Dan Motreanu, the general secretary of the PNL, towards the PSD leader, Sorin Grindeanu, were also mentioned.

Politico also noted the arithmetic in Parliament and wrote that according to local media, the motion could be debated in Parliament in early May.
