Former PiS senator Waldemar Bonkowski will avoid part of the punishment


According to the judgment of the District Court in Kościerzyna, which was later changed by the District Court in Gdańsk, Bonkowski, after serving his prison sentence, was to perform community service for a year, 30 hours a month.

— The convict was to begin serving his sentence of restriction of liberty immediately after the end of his term of imprisonment, said Judge Kaźmierczak and added that the activities related to organizing and controlling the performance of community service are performed by the probation officer.

Changing your decision after presenting a medical certificate

According to the court, the convicted Waldemar Bonkowski showed up for a meeting with the probation officer once, on October 9, 2024. The probation officer then instructed him on the scope of rights and obligations during the enforcement proceedings. The convict presented a medical certificate stating that due to his health condition he cannot perform physical work.

In the meantime, the convict's defense attorney filed a complaint with the District Court in Kościerzyna a request to change the method of imposing a penalty of restriction of liberty from community service to deducting part of the remuneration for work. The proceedings in this regard ended with the issuance of a decision by the District Court in Gdańsk on February 4, 2025, which validly dismissed the application.

After resolving this issue, the probation officer again summoned the convicted former politician for a meeting before determining the place and type of work. The meeting was scheduled to take place on March 24, 2025. — Waldemar Bonkowski did not receive the correspondence sent to him by the probation officer nor did he appear at the headquarters of the Probation Service team – said Judge Kaźmierczak.

The convict came to the next summons on April 23, 2025 and presented the probation officer with medical documentation, in which he indicated that the execution of the penalty of restriction of liberty it would expose him to deterioration of his health.

“The convict suffers from a number of diseases”

The District Court obtained a judicial and medical opinion regarding the convict's current health condition. — Experts found that the convict suffered from a number of diseases, which make him permanently unable to work, and there are no prognosis for this condition to improve, said judge Kaźmierczak.

Based on this opinion, the court found that Waldemar Bonkowski had a permanent obstacle preventing the execution of the penalty of restriction of liberty and on April 13, 2026 discontinued the enforcement proceedings. The decision is invalid. The information that Bonkowski would not do social work was first reported by Radio Gdańsk.

Sentence for abusing a dog

In April 2024, the District Court in Gdańsk sentenced the former senator for particularly cruel abuse of a dog, which consequently diedł. Bonkowski pulled a dog on a rope behind his car in March 2021, which was recorded by another driver.

In addition to the three-month prison sentence, Bonkowski was also sentenced to, among others, for a year of community service. Until the end of the trial, the former senator pleaded not guilty. After the verdict, he claimed that he was the victim of a political campaign.

Waldemar Bonkowski won a senatorial seat in the 2015 parliamentary elections as a candidate of Law and Justice. In February 2018, after a series of anti-Semitic posts on social media, PiS president Jarosław Kaczyński suspended him as a party member. Bonkowski became an unaffiliated senator. In the 2019 elections, he ran for re-election from his own electoral committee, but did not get into parliament.
