On Wednesday, the “Analysis of the impact of the Port of Gdansk on the economy of the city, region and country” prepared by the consulting and auditing company PwC Polska was presented at the Port of Gdansk.

The report discusses the port's impact in four key areas: labor market, value added and GDP, public finances and foreign trade. The study was conducted from April to autumn 2025, and its results apply to 2024.

– The aim of the analysis was to estimate the impact of the Port of Gdansk on the economy. It uses the Leontief model, which allows analyzing how the demand impulse in the economy spreads between sectors through inter-industry connections – Julia Otwinowska, an expert from PwC Polska, told PAP.

The analysis shows that the activities of the Port of Gdansk generate PLN 20.5 billion of added value annuallywhich – as Otwinowska pointed out – can be compared to the economic effect of a large city with several hundred thousand inhabitants.

According to PwC, throughout the country, the port's activities support the maintenance of approximately 84,000. jobs. In turn, in the Pomeranian Voivodeship this number is approximately 47 thousand. This means – as emphasized – that every 20th job in the region may be related to the operation of the port.

Most of the employees, over half of them, live in Gdańsk. Entrepreneurs operating in the port also provide jobs to residents of the surrounding counties – mainly Gdańsk and Kartuzy, but also from the neighboring Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.

Otwinowska noted that there are approximately 700 companies operating in the Port of Gdansk, representing various sectors of the economy – both directly related to port activities and operating in office spaces.

As she pointed out, this type of research is a standard method used to assess the economic impact of enterprises and sectors. Otwinowska also announced that this is the first study of this type conducted by PwC at the Port of Gdansk.

The President of the Port of Gdańsk, Dorota Pić, noted that the port “is an economic entity, closely related to global trade, bringing real benefits to the inhabitants of Gdańsk, Pomerania and the entire country in high annual revenues to the state budget.”

– These are funds that return to citizens, for example, in the form of public services, investments or social programs, and at the same time proof that the development of port infrastructure is an investment of strategic importance – she added.

The Port of Gdansk is the largest seaport in Poland. In 2025, 80.4 million tons of goods were transhipped there, including 39.6 million tons of liquid fuels, including 37.4 million tons of crude oil at Naftoport. The second group was general cargo, including containers – a total of nearly 2.8 million TEU. 4,394 ships called at the port. (PAP)
