Nicole Kidman reveals she'll be a doula: 'It might seem a little weird'

Nicole Kidman is ready for a new role in the next chapter of her life, revealing that she is preparing to become a doula for people near death, Variety reports.

According to Medlife, a doula is a person trained to provide both information and emotional and physical support to a pregnant woman during labor and delivery.

But in countries like the US this non-medical companion profession also refers to people who provide support to the elderly or terminally ill, not just pregnant women.

Kidman said in a recent audience discussion at the University of San Francisco that her new role may seem “a little strange” to her, but explained that she became interested in the profession after her mother died in 2024 at the age of 84.

Nicole Kidman's touching revelation

“As my mother was dying, she felt lonely and the family could only help her to a point,” Kidman told the audience, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“My sister and I have so many kids and our careers and our work and wanting to take care of her because my dad was no longer alive, and I was like, 'I wish there were people who would be there to stand by her in an unbiased way and just provide comfort and care,'” said the actress, who won an Oscar in 2003 for her performance in the psychological drama “The Hours.”

“So that's part of my development and one of the things that I'm going to learn,” Nicole Kidman also said at the University of San Francisco, a private Jesuit educational institution.

Variety magazine recalls that the actress' father, Australian psychologist and university professor Antony Kidman, died in 2014, following a heart attack he suffered after a fall.

The movies that Nicole Kidman has starred in in recent years can be seen in streaming

However, the new comments made by Nicole Kidman, now 58 years old, do not mean that she intends to give up acting.

One of the most sought-after and highest-paid actresses in Hollywood in the early 2000s, Kidman later experienced a career decline. But she made a spectacular return to the limelight last year thanks to the film Babygirl, in which she plays the director of a powerful company who jeopardizes her career and family life after she begins a torrid affair with an intern much younger than her.

The film that premiered in cinemas in Romania in January 2025, intended for the 18+ audience, can currently be seen in streaming by HBO Max subscribers or can be rented digitally on Amazon Prime Video for 9.99 RON.

“Holland,” another of her films from last year, recently shot up the streaming charts after hitting HBO Max. But the feature film in which she plays the role of a housewife whose life is turned upside down by the discovery of a disturbing secret is rather mediocre. Also available on Prime Video, it has an average rating of just 5/10 on IMDb and a disastrous 21% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from film critics.

“Being The Ricardos,” the film that earned her her most recent Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2022, can also be seen on Prime Video. The film tells the story of the relationship between Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, whom the classic series “I Love Lucy” made two of the biggest stars of American television.

The veteran actress is the protagonist of a series released last month

Most recently, Kidman starred as forensic scientist Kay Scarpetta in the eponymous series based on the novels by American author Patricia Cornwell, released last month on Prime Video.

“Famous criminalist Kay Scarpetta returns to her former position as the chief medical examiner for the state of Virginia, investigating a haunting murder with eerie echoes of her first big case decades ago. In 1998, Scarpetta works alongside Detective Pete Marino and FBI agent Benton Wesley to investigate a series of brutal strangulations,” is Prime Video's official description for the series.

Kidman stars in the series alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana DeBose, Bobby Cannavale and Simon Baker, among others.
