Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has criticized statements made by German officials regarding the drone incident at Leipzig Airport.
This week, the German government blamed Russia for a drone attack attempt at the airport last month.
In an interview aired on Sunday, Lavrov responded, noting, “Leipzig, airport (…) They found a drone there. They said it was Russian, and no one bothered to investigate further. Broadly speaking, this is essentially the beginning of a real war,” as reported by EFE.
He also referenced German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, saying, “All these statements by Merz about transforming Germany into the leading military power in Europe are being put into practice. He is effectively declaring war on us.”
Germany Publicly Blames Russia
Germany considers Russia responsible for a “hybrid attack” allegedly executed with an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig Airport in early August. This airport is a critical base for the German military, NATO, and logistical support for Ukraine, according to statements made Tuesday by German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, reported by AFP, BBC News, and The Guardian.
German media reported that police identified the DNA of two men with Russian passports suspected of bringing the explosive drone to Leipzig Airport.
Overall, police investigations, the methods of operation, and intelligence information demonstrate Russia’s responsibility in the attempted attack at Leipzig Airport, Dobrindt asserted.
In response to the incident, this week, the Russian ambassador to Bucharest was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Strengthening Defense Measures
German authorities are preparing a comprehensive package of measures to enhance their defense against drone attacks, cyberattacks, and other forms of Russian sabotage, as reported Sunday by Bild am Sonntag, cited by Reuters.
The plan includes expanding the mobile capabilities of the police to defend against drones.
Rapidly deployable anti-drone units are expected to be stationed in cities to protect airspace above key transport hubs and areas where government institutions are located.
