Meryl Streep criticizes the US First Lady because of her outfit and says something that amazes her

Meryl Streep has launched a “stab” at the clothing choices of the First Lady of the United States, Melania Trump, saying that her style sends a “strong message”, but not one to be admired, reports Far Out Magazine.

After a notable absence from the public space, the 76-year-old actress has been making the rounds of the media recently, giving numerous interviews to promote her new film “The Devil Wears Prada 2”, a sequel after 20 years of the story based on the novel of the same name by the American writer Lauren Weisberger.

In an interview last week, she revealed that, unlike the original film, the new production had a budget commensurate with the names involved. Apart from Streep, the comedy “The Devil Wears Prada 2” also stars Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, as well as new names such as Sydney Sweeney, Lucy Liu, Justin Theroux and Kenneth Branagh.

Streep gave a new interview for Vogue precisely alongside Anna Wintour, the legendary fashion journalist who ran the magazine for 37 years and is considered the inspiration for the character played by the actress in the film.

The two were discussing the clothing choices of several women in political and public life, especially former First Lady Michelle Obama and Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Streep recalled a strong controversy sparked by Melania Trump

“To be fair, Melania Trump also always looks like herself when she dresses,” Wintour said first, after previously expressing her admiration for the other two women.

“I have a lot of thoughts about it,” Streep replied. “I think the most… powerful message that the current First Lady sent was through the coat that said 'I Really Don't Care, Do U?' (I really don't care, do you?), when he went to see migrant children who were in detention”.

The actress referred to a situation that sparked heated controversy in the US during Donald Trump's first term, when the First Lady visited the New Hope Children's Shelter in Texas in June 2018 wearing a jacket with that message.

Although she initially denied it was an intentional gesture, the First Lady later admitted in an interview with ABC News that it was “kind of a message, yes.”

Streep continued in the new interview: “Clothing is about self-expression, but we're also subject to broader historical and political currents that create expectations.”

Still, she added: “I'm amazed that women in positions of power have to be bare-armed on TV, while men are covered in shirts and ties or suits. There's a form of implicit apology to women. They have to show their smallness.”

“The Devil Wears Prada 2”, the new film starring Meryl Streep, will be released in cinemas on May 1, being considered one of the most anticipated comedies of this year.
