On this day in Rus' they honored the most beloved tree among the people – the birch. It was called the tree of life, health and light.
Russian people had many beliefs associated with birch. A sick child, for example, had to be whipped with a birch twig – and the illness would go away. If you stick a birch branch into the roof, it will protect the house from lightning. And it’s completely impossible to imagine a Russian bathhouse without a birch broom.
With the advent of Christianity, a respectful attitude towards birch received a new justification. According to legend, it was under this tree that the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus hid from the weather.
On this day we had to go out into the birch grove and listen to the trees. This was done in order to determine whether the movement of juice had begun. Each family prepared the juice. Sbitni were cooked from it with the addition of honey and seasonings. The sick were given fresh birch sap to drink. It was believed that this drink cleanses the blood and expels all infirmities from the stomach.
