– While combing the border areas, the army discovered a network of tunnels connecting the two countries, which were used to smuggle weapons and drugs, said Mohammad Hammud from the Syrian border services. The tunnels were used by Hezbollah, an Iranian-financed terrorist organization operating mainly from Lebanon, he added.

Some tunnels were equipped with electrical installations and ventilation systems.

Previous Syrian president Bashar al-Assad cooperated closely with Iran, but since his overthrow in December 2024 the routes along which Hezbollah's supplies traveled from Syria have been cut off.

The new Islamist authorities in Damascus claim to be cooperating with Lebanon in combating smuggling and controlling border crossings, Naharnet emphasized. In early March, the Syrian authorities announced the strengthening of forces on the border in order to monitor the situation and secure the border in the face of the war between the US, Israel and Iran that has been ongoing in the region since February 28.

Syria is not participating in the conflict, but on March 10, the authorities in Damascus accused Hezbollah of shelling Syrian army positions. On the same day, the presidents of Syria and Lebanon, after a telephone conversation, emphasized the need to control the border and prevent “any security violations.”

The new Syrian president, Ahmed al-Shara, emphasized on Tuesday during his visit to Britain that his country wants to stay out of the war. – As long as Syria does not become the target of a direct attack by any side, it will remain out of the conflict – he emphasized.

Fourteen years of (civil) war in Syria are enough. We have paid a very high price and we are not ready for new experiences (of this type – PAP).
