The United States has significantly lost influence on Ukraine, Bloomberg believes. How did this happen?

This comes as American attention and resources have been refocused on the war in the Middle East, resulting in a reduction in the supply of critical weapons, intelligence and funding to Ukraine.

The publication notes that US President Donald Trump's decision to launch a military operation against Iran strengthened the position of the aggressor country of the Russian Federation and limited Washington's ability to put pressure on Kyiv due to the threat of cutting off aid. At the same time, Ukraine has developed its own “cards” to compensate for the reduction in external support: the state is increasing its technological capabilities in the field of drones and missile defense, which allows it to effectively counter Russia’s advantages in the number of forces and equipment.

Bloomberg also notes that Ukraine's experience in intercepting drones and producing its own drones has made it a more attractive partner for other countries. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already begun to use these successes to forge new agreements with Gulf countries including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, including joint drone production and technology sharing.

Bloomberg analysts note that Ukraine now has the opportunity to independently influence the situation and create new strategic alliances. At the same time, American security guarantees are losing their former attractiveness due to limited resources and US priorities in the Middle East.

According to Nikolai Beleskov, an analyst at the National Institute of Strategic Studies, Ukrainian technological advantages and experience in modern warfare have become a new lever of influence for Kyiv, and the reduction of American control only underscores this change in the balance of power.

Context

Since 2025, the United States has been negotiating with the Russian Federation and Ukraine to end the Russian-Ukrainian war, in particular, the administration of US President Donald Trump presented a draft “peace plan.”

After another round tripartite negotiations in Geneva in February this year, the delegations planned to meet in early March, as Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky reported, during March 5–9 in Abu Dhabi (UAE). However due to the military operation that Israel and the United States launched against Iran on February 28, negotiations several times postponed at the request of the American side.

On March 21, Zelensky said that the United States was signaling its readiness to continue working in the current negotiation formats.

The US and Ukrainian delegations met in Florida on March 21st and 22nd. However, after the report of the Ukrainian negotiating team, Zelensky announced on March 24 that there was no “real movement” in the negotiations.
