If the dill on your plot does not sprout or first grows and then suddenly withers, there is a simple method that will help you get a guaranteed and juicy harvest.
When to sow
Dill can be sown even in winter – right in the snow. In the spring it will rise when it needs to, and will not be afraid of frost. You should not sow dill only in intense heat: in such weather, the scorching sun destroys the tender leaves of the crop.
Where to buy seeds cheaply
To save on seed material, you can go to a regular pharmacy. Dill seeds are sold there, and a large package will cost only 100 rubles. It will last a long time. It turns out noticeably cheaper than buying seeds in gardening stores. And the quality of pharmaceutical seeds is no worse than half-empty bags for 50 rubles apiece.
How to prepare a bed
Before sowing, the bed must be well filled with organic matter. The principle is simple: the more, the better. Ideally, a bucket of compost per square meter. It is not necessary to dig up the fertilizer deeply; it is enough to lightly work it into the soil. If compost is not available, mullein, bird droppings or horse manure can be used instead in standard dosages. It is organic matter that helps dill grow lush green mass.
A common reason that dill grows frail and weak is watering with alkaline water. Some summer residents have literally white water coming out of their hose, but dill doesn’t like that. This crop prefers slightly acidic soil. Therefore, if the soil is highly alkaline, rare watering with the addition of an acid, such as citric acid, is required.
How to fight aphids
When dill just emerges, it can be attacked by aphids. To get rid of it safely, the greens are sprayed with soap-ash infusions, ammonia or biological pest control agents. It is better to do preventative spraying in general than to fight a large number of aphids later.
But not every aphid sits on the tops of dill. There is also aphids, and they become an invisible scourge for many summer residents. This pest is capable of cleaning out dill beds in a matter of days, appearing suddenly.
“To be honest, I only encountered this once, but sometimes I read stories from subscribers. I removed earth aphids by double pouring the soil with a solution of ammonia, keeping the interval between soil treatments to a week,” the author of the Zen channel “Lyubimaya Dacha. Garden and Vegetable Garden” (12+) shares her experience.
