Experts warn that closing the Bab al-Mandab and Hormuz straits could cause major disruptions in international trade and significant increases in shipping and insurance prices.
According to the Israeli army (IDF), the missile launched towards Tel Aviv was intercepted, but experts warn that the Yemeni militia could in the future target ships transiting the Red Sea or even the Suez Canal, writes dailymail.
Professor Mohamad Elmasry of the Doha Institute for Advanced Studies points out that if the Houthis were to close the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, they would add to the Strait of Hormuz already affected by tensions with Iran.
“If they decide to close these strategic points, the impact on international trade would be major”Elmasry said.
The conflict, now in its second month since the first strikes on Iran, continues to cause casualties.
Over the past week, Iranian attacks on a Saudi air base have injured more than twenty American servicemen, including 15 at the Prince Sultan base. In addition, drone strikes and attacks were reported in Iran, Lebanon, Israel and Bahrain.
Israel has threatened to step up military operations against the Islamic regime, while US President Donald Trump has hinted he is considering sending troops to the region – a move Iran has warned would have “a heavy price to pay”.
The Houthi rebels have said they will continue attacks until the “aggression” on all fronts ends.
The Houthis previously attacked several ships in the Red Sea during the Gaza war, and now there are fears they could effectively block Suez, affecting global trade.
