Alexander's Day, Forest grooming
The holiday was named in honor of the two holy martyrs Alexander, whose memory is celebrated on this day along with the memory of Agapius and five other martyrs who suffered for the faith in the 4th century.
In Rus', they waited for the first seagulls to arrive on Alexander – this foreshadowed the warmth of the spring and the imminent start of ice drift. But if the birds immediately began to swim, this promised inclement weather.
Special signs were associated with wolves. It was believed that Alexander's Day was the height of the “wolf weddings.” During this period, wolves become aggressive and can even attack humans. They said that if wolves howl terribly in the forest and do not allow you to sleep, then you can get rid of fear by turning over your pillow.
In addition, this day was called Forest Grooming, because it was necessary to speak with great respect about the forest, which in many ways was the breadwinner of the peasants – it provided mushrooms, berries, game, and medicinal herbs.
