In winter, experienced gardeners recommend reducing watering of indoor plants so that they overwinter safely and begin to bloom actively in the spring. On December 12, the website of the Ukrainian publication “In Retirement” tells how to properly water plants during the cold season.
“The most common winter mistake is waterlogging the soil, which is more dangerous than lack of water and often leads to rotting of the roots,” the article says. “Different types of indoor plants need radically different watering regimes in winter, so there is no universal schedule.”
Before watering, it is important to check the soil – if it is dry, then the plants need water. Most houseplants require watering once a week, but there are some that should be watered once or twice a month. These include plants of the cactus family – telocactus, rhipsalis, harrisia, for which even one teaspoon of water is enough in winter.
What water to water
Florists recommend standing water for irrigation. In addition, the water temperature should be around 20 °C.
