The American troops who liberated the Dachau concentration camp at the end of the war were horrified by the horrors committed behind the barbed wire fences. Thousands of corpses and other testimonies of the crimes committed by the Nazis came to light.
The system of concentration camps was initiated in 1933, under the leadership of Heinrich Himmler, a follower of the ethnic cleansing supported by Hitler. The Dachau camp

Initially conceived as forced labor camps for party rivals, the camps became, especially after 1934, extermination camps based on ethnic and racial principles.
