Venice Biennale – Resignation requests and EU funding in jeopardy

The Venice Biennale's “neutrality” regarding Israel and Russia's participation in this year's edition is sparking outrage, calls for resignations and jeopardizing major funding from the European Union. In addition, it raises security issues.
An open letter published by an activist group calling for Israel's exclusion from the Venice Biennale has been signed by around 200 participating artists and curators, as Italy's culture minister calls for the resignation of the government's representative on the event's Board of Directors, Tamara Gregoretti, amid a deepening political row over Russia's intention to reopen its flag at the 2026 edition of the art exhibition.
At the same time, the European Union says it could withdraw funding for the Biennale if Russia continues to host the event.
Hundreds of artists and curators vs. Israel
A few weeks ago, the artist-led activist group Art Not Genocide Alliance (ANGA) called on the Biennale to exclude Israel from this year's event until the state “is brought to justice for its crimes.” The group warned that if Israel was not removed, it would mobilize “a total boycott” of artists and audiences.
This week, an open letter calling on the Biennale to prevent Israel from participating in this year's exhibition was signed by around 200 participating artists, curators and art professionals.
Signatories to the letter include Gabe Beckhurst Feijoo and Rasha Salti, two members of the curatorial team tasked with realizing the vision of the late curator Koyo Kouoh.
