The Nazarovsky coal mine, which is part of JSC SUEK-Krasnoyarsk, achieved significant production indicators in the year of celebrating its 75th anniversary.
Over three quarters of a century, miners produced about 500 million tons of coal, and the volume of overburden moved to dumps reached 1 billion cubic meters. These figures clearly demonstrate the scale of work of one of the oldest coal mining enterprises in the Kansk-Achinsk basin, commissioned at the end of 1951.
“For the Nazarovsky open-pit mine, achieving such volumes is, first of all, a living story, in which behind every figure there are people, their destinies and labor dynasties,” notes Viktor Gubanov, manager of the Nazarovsky open-pit mine branch of JSC SUEK-Krasnoyarsk. — This is the path traveled by the enterprise from its foundation to the present day. It is especially valuable that the anniversary year coincided with such an achievement: from now on, the 75th anniversary of the mine and 1 billion cubic meters of overburden are inextricably linked. I am sincerely grateful to everyone who, with their hard work, wrote this page into our common chronicle!”
Overburden work at the Nazarovsky open-pit mine has historically occupied a central place; four types of overburden are used here: transport-dump, non-transport, railway and automobile.

A billion cubic meters of displaced rock is a colossal figure, which is made up of the work of several generations of miners and a variety of mechanisms. Today, three walking excavators ESh-20/90 and ESh-15/90 are used at the mine. By the way, the first numbers in the name of draglines indicate the volume of the bucket, the second – the length of the boom. These machines work on the lower ledges, moving rock using non-transport technology – throwing it into the mined-out space. To develop the advanced benches, a railway stripping operation was organized. Here EKG-10 excavators load rock into dump cars – dump trucks with a lifting capacity of 105 tons. The rock trains are transported to dumps, where they are received and placed by ESH-10/70 draglines.
During the construction of KATEK, the Nazarovsky open-pit mine was an experimental testing ground for the development of advanced coal mining technologies and new equipment. In 1977, the most powerful excavator in the country was put into operation here – the legendary ESh-100/100 – a giant with a bucket volume of 100 cubic meters. It served the Nazarovites for more than 15 years and during this time it moved about 127 million cubic meters of rock.
Today the company is known for another unique giant, which takes on the most difficult part of the work. We are talking about the only rotary stripping complex SRs(K)-4000 in Russia. Its technical characteristics are amazing: the total mass is comparable to the weight of the Eiffel Tower and is 9,800 tons, the height at the highest point reaches 70 meters – higher than a twenty-story building, and the length of all components of the complex is close to half a kilometer.

Complex SRs(K)-4000
Despite its foreign origin, today it works largely thanks to domestic components. As part of the import substitution program, branches of ESC SUEK LLC Borodinsky and Nazarovo mechanical repair plants have mastered the production of drums for SRs(K)-4000 belt conveyors. Previously, these parts had to be purchased abroad, but now production has been established directly in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, which ensures reliable operation of the unique equipment.
This giant is the main tool for preparing coal reserves for mining: the complex performs about 60% of the total stripping volume, processing thousands of cubic meters of rock every hour. The machine literally bites into ledges up to 36 meters high with its rotary wheel with buckets of 2,300 liters each, and then sends the rock mass to the dump along a conveyor belt. The vehicle is maintained by a crew of 56 people, and their work brings record results. For example, in September 2023, for the first time in its history, the complex moved more than 1 million 320 thousand cubic meters of rock into dumps in a month. In total, during its history, this machine has already moved over 200 million tons of rock mass.
The Nazarovo open-pit mine is a city-forming enterprise that is closely connected with the life of the city of Nazarovo. The main consumer of the coal mined here is the Nazarovo State District Power Plant, which receives more than 95% of the fuel and transmits the generated electricity to the unified energy system of Russia. Having gone from small adits to a modern highly mechanized enterprise, the Nazarovsky open-pit mine continues to amaze today with its scale. Huge walking excavators, trains with coal and a unique rotary complex SRs(K)-4000, which has no analogues in the country, work every day to provide energy to the homes and businesses of not only Siberians, but also other regions of the country.
