Those who do not share his opinion, and above all, those who do not support him, must expect a harsh judgment. Now the American leader is again sharply attacking US allies and NATO members.
On his Truth Social platform, he wrote that most NATO allies have informed the US that they do not intend to take part in a military operation against the “terrorist regime” of Iran in the Middle East. “This despite the fact that almost every single one of these countries strongly supported our actions and Iran absolutely cannot be allowed to have nuclear weapons,” Trump wrote.
The US president is not surprised by the allies' behavior. As he emphasized, NATO “has always been considered a one-way street.” He added that the United States spends hundreds of billions of dollars every year to protect these countries, and now they refuse to support them.
Thanks to military successes in the Middle East, The US no longer needs and does not want the support of NATO countries. As Trump writes, Americans have never needed it, and then emphatically states: “In fact, as president of the United States of America, by far the most powerful country in the world, we don't need anyone's help!”
The US should rethink NATO membership
During a news conference in the Oval Office on Tuesday, shortly after the post was published, Trump again attacked NATO members who did not support his position. “I think this is very bad news for NATO,” Trump said.
He even points to the United States leaving NATO as a possible consequence of this situation. In the presence of the media, he said that US membership in the Alliance is “something we should seriously consider.”
Trump predicts Macron's removal from power
In his speech, he also directly attacked the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. France also refused to support Trump. — We are not a party to the conflict, so in the current situation, France will not take part in operations aimed at opening or taking control of the Strait of Hormuz, Macron said during a meeting of the French National Defense Council on Tuesday.
When asked about this, Trump replied: “Well, he's going to stop being president very quickly.” We'll see. I don't know that.
On the one hand, the president of the United States it criticizes NATO member states, and on the other hand, it praises the countries of the Middle East. — The countries of the Middle East, including Israel, which supported us greatly and provided us with enormous help, he emphasized.
Searching for mines in the Strait of Hormuz
Already in January this year. Trump expressed doubts whether NATO countries would come to the United States' aid. However, he also said that the United States “will always support NATO, even if the alliance does not support us.”
The support Washington asked its allies for included, among others: securing the Strait of Hormuz and “neutralizing hostile groups along the coast.” The US refused, among other things, Germany, UK, Japan, Australia, France, Denmark and South Korea.
They justify their refusal primarily with three arguments:
- NATO members do not want to be drawn into a conflict with Iran.
- doubts arise regarding the legal and political basis: In the case of Iran, there is no automatic mutual defense clause. Moreover, many countries lack clear regulations on troop dispatch. Since the mandate, goal and exit strategy adopted by the US are not clear, there is a risk of being actually involved in hostilities, and not just in a protective mission.
- NATO is not a tool for waging aggressive war.
- NATO currently has 32 members. The Alliance was founded in 1949 by twelve countries. The NATO treaty provides for mutual assistance in the event of an armed attack against one of its members.
