VIDEO Romania is headed for early elections if the PNL decides to leave the government on Saturday, says Sorin Grindeanu

The president of the PSD, Sorin Grindeanu, declared on Monday, at the Parliament, that Romania is heading for early elections if the PNL decides to leave the government. The social democratic leader said that the PSD will not support a minority government and that his party will also decide after internal consultations whether or not to remain in the coalition.

The PSD president admitted that the coalition “is not in the best shape”. “You know that we have already announced, since the beginning of December, that immediately after the budget we will do that internal consultation. First of all, if you want, we will do an x-ray of our activity in the Government, of the PSD ministers, and after that of course we will analyze the activity of the entire Government. The almost 5,000 PSD colleagues, as they voted in good faith to enter this coalition, will decide in good faith,” said Grindeanu.
He advanced two scenarios: one in which the PSD decides to leave the government and then early elections can take place, or one in which the PSD chooses to remain in the Coalition but “with certain conditions”.
“PSD will decide for PSD, not for PNL. PSD can decide that, yes, we go into opposition and we're done, and then it's a plausible scenario to reach the anticipated, obviously, or PSD decides: we stay in this coalition, but with certain conditions, if you want us to continue as partners”, declared the social democratic leader.
Grindeanu said that if the PNL decides to leave the government, and the parties maintain their position of not making alliances with the AUR, then the anticipated scenario becomes probable again.
“If this happens, if people keep their statements and say they don't want to make alliances with AUR or parties of that type, then we are heading towards the anticipated,” he said.
Asked if the PSD would remain in government alongside the USR, the social-democratic leader replied that his party would not support a minority government.
Grindeanu also excluded the version of a minority formula supported in Parliament by AUR. “I said no. The PSD does not support a minority government,” said the PSD president.
PNL decides whether to leave the government
The National Liberal Party (PNL) will hold a meeting of the National Political Bureau at the weekend in which it will determine whether or not it will remain in government, party sources told HotNews.
The PNL is to analyze whether the PSD violated the governing protocol during the eight months of activity of the current coalition, according to HotNews sources.
A decision will be taken after the Parliament's vote on the state budget, the sources say.
Other sources in the PNL say that it is clear that the people of the territory want to stay in government, as a result there may not be a clear vote on leaving or staying in government. However, in the meetings of the National Political Bureau of the PNL, which will take place on Friday and Saturday, the period of government will be analyzed.
However, it will most likely also be a vote to support Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, according to these sources.
