Railgun fires again. The American army returns to unusual weapons

When in 2021 the American army decided to suspend work on the electromagnetic cannon, the so-called railgun, there was no indication that this project would come back into favor in the Pentagon a few years later. Meanwhile, everything seems to indicate that this is exactly what happened. According to the US Navy, at least one test firing of such an arsenal was carried out in 2025.

Interestingly, the three-day test took place in February 2025, just a few weeks after Donald Trump took power. It is difficult to say at this point whether these two facts are related, but railguns are supposed to be the main armament of Trump-class battleships. The US army's announcement will please the American president because it shows that the Pentagon is actually implementing his ambitious idea.

Railguns are not a pipe dream. Some countries already have such weapons

Electromagnetic guns, which use electromagnets instead of a chemical reaction to fire projectiles at very high speeds, have been a technological challenge for years. However, countries such as Japan show that this type of arsenal is no longer just an attribute of science-fiction films.

The Japanese Navy has been testing this type of weapons for months and everything indicates that it will be the first country to introduce them into service. During the tests, a bullet fired from a Japanese railgun reached a speed of over 7,000. km per hour, with an energy of 5 MJ (megajoules), and the final version of the gun will fire projectiles with an energy of as much as 20 MJ. This means that the kinetic impact force of the missile will be so great that it will easily destroy targets such as drones or missiles and will easily break through the hulls of warships.
