A 10-year-old and a 17-year-old boy were killed. Four more children were rescued from the water by a local resident; the children were taken to the hospital with symptoms of hypothermia, Viktor Zabashta, director of the region’s emergency medical care center, told Suspilny. According to him, they are in a mild condition, there is no threat to life.

The children were walking on the pond and went out on the ice, said Bogdan Gladkikh, director of the city emergency department. According to him, they “instantly failed.” Nearby was a 17-year-old teenager who was walking his dog and rushed to help. He also drowned, but the dog escaped.

Four children were rescued by a 40-year-old local resident who works at an enterprise near the reservoir, the official said. According to Gladkikh, the man needed medical attention: he became ill when he went into the water to retrieve his fifth child. According to the Kharkov region police, two boys and two girls were rescued.

The head of the Kharkov regional council, Tatyana Egorova-Lutsenko, wrote on Facebook that she was initiating an award for the person who saved the drowning children.
