Folk calendar

Porfiry Late

On this day, the Orthodox Church commemorates St. Porphyry, Archbishop of Gaza, who lived in the 5th century.

In Rus', on Porfiry, wise people said: “Early spring is worth nothing, and late spring will deceive.” Despite the approaching warmth, the peasants were afraid to take up field work, because the danger of frost was still great. And if the cold suddenly hits, all the crops will die.

The weather was judged by the behavior of birds. It was believed that if migratory birds had already returned home, a good grain harvest could be expected. They also observed how birds build nests: if they place their future homes on the sunny side of houses and trees, the summer will be cold; and vice versa – if birds are not afraid to settle on the north side, then people can count on fine days.
