I figure out “fake” honey “by clicking”: I do a couple of tricks right at the counter – I don’t spend money on fake

When buying honey, we often doubt its naturalness. The market is full of fakes, diluted with sugar syrup or molasses.

But you don't need a lab to tell the real thing from the fake. These 3 rapid tests take less than a minute and will accurately detect deception.

1. Finger test

Place some honey on your fingertip.

  • Natural honey will hold its shape like a dense drop and slowly, viscously spread when tilted.
  • The fake will spread immediately, like liquid syrup, and will be sticky and watery.

2. Test on paper

Place a small drop on a paper napkin or piece of paper.

  • Natural honey will remain a convex drop, without spreading or leaving a wet water stain around it.
  • The fake will quickly begin to absorb, forming a wet “halo” around itself. This is a clear sign of added water or syrup.

3. “Rope” on a spoon

Scoop the honey with a spoon, lift it up and watch it flow back down.

  • Natural honey will stretch in a continuous stream, like an elastic thread, forming a neat mound on the surface that slowly spreads.
  • The fake will drip intermittently, like liquid syrup, or burst into drops.

Additional signs

Smell and taste

Real honey has a multifaceted aroma (flowers, herbs, wood) and a pleasant, delicate aftertaste. The fake smells sweet, but is “empty”, and the taste can be cloying or reek of caramel.

Crystallization

This is a natural process for most varieties (buckwheat, sunflower, linden). Honey that remains liquid for more than a year (except acacia and chestnut) is most likely fake.

Real honey is a living product with a unique texture. It does not behave like a regular sweet liquid. These simple tests will protect you from wasting money. Take half a minute to check to be sure of the quality of what lands on your table.

When buying counterfeit, you are not just overpaying for sugar. You are depriving yourself of all the beneficial enzymes, vitamins and antimicrobial properties for which real honey is valued.
