According to the department, one drone crashed into the airport terminal building, and the other fell near a school in the village of Shekarabad. The attack damaged buildings and injured two civilians.
The ministry said the incident violates international law and contributes to rising tensions in the region. Baku demanded that Tehran urgently explain what happened and take measures to prevent such incidents from happening again.
Azerbaijan also said it reserves the right to retaliate.
In connection with the incident, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Iran to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Dermichilu, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and they plan to present him with a note of protest.
Earlier, the media published a video of the attack on Nakhchivan airport.
