In 2025, the most widespread fraudulent scheme in Russia was in which deceived people themselves called the criminals back in an attempt to protect their money. The Central Bank of the Russian Federation reported this.
The attackers acted in several stages. First, they called a person under the guise of employees of shops, cafes, flower salons and courier services. They told the interlocutor that an order had been placed in his name and for delivery he needed to dictate the code from the SMS. After the victim called the code, the call was interrupted and the voice robot reported that the call was from scammers. Next, the scammers sent the person a fake message about hacking of State Services or an attempt to apply for a loan, indicating a contact phone number.
“When a person called this number, the attackers, under the pretext of saving money, convinced him to transfer savings to their accounts or transfer them in cash,” said the Bank of Russia.
Experts appealed to citizens of the country with a request not to let down their vigilance, since in such situations banks do not compensate the client for financial losses. There is a chance to get your savings back only if the police find the criminals. Therefore, you must always carefully look at who the secret codes are coming from. This is the only way to avoid problems.
If you receive an alarming message, for example from a bank or State Services, urging you to call back a number or follow a link, you should not do this. It is better to independently find the official contacts of the organization on whose behalf you were contacted and clarify the situation.
