Folk calendar
Pankratiya Day
On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of St. Pankratius of Pechersk, a recluse who lived in the 13th century. According to legend, he retired to caves and led an ascetic lifestyle there, spending time in prayer.
In Rus', Pankratia has always been used to weave bast shoes. Winter was coming to an end, there were few grain reserves left, so they said: “Not every Pankrat is rich in bread, but our Pankrat is rich in bast shoes.” And since Saint Nicephorus was also honored on this day, the peasants kindly made fun of the two righteous people sharing one holiday for two: “Pankrat’s bast shoes are good, and even those are Nicephorians.” Nikiforians usually called high bast shoes that were worn at home on bare feet.
Also on this day, it was supposed to check the entire household, see if everything was in order, and whether the property needed repairs. It was not for nothing that they said: “If Pankratiy has the matter in his hands, the owner has bread in his mouth.”
We also watched the weather, noticing that winter was beginning to weaken. The approach of spring is dedicated to the saying: “The night is dark on Pankratia – winter is running away.” It was believed that the colder the week that begins from this day, the warmer it will be in March.
