Serbs once again took to the streets. “They attack them with sticks and fists”

On Monday in Novi Sad, a group of men dressed in black, whom protesters identified as supporters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), attacked students in front of the Serbian National Theater. The police initially did not react. Videos published on social media show protesters and journalists being beaten and knocked down.

Demonstrators took to the streets of Novi Sad, Belgrade, Niš and Prokupje on Tuesday. Residents gathered in Novi Sad announced that they “gathered to show the students that they are still with them.”

“For almost 15 months, students have been leading the fight of all of us, for all of us. They attack them with cars, sticks, fists… Yesterday they sent criminals, bewildered by hatred, armed with the blessing of the party, who smashed their heads in front of blind and deaf policemen,” reads a statement from the group of Novi Sad citizens that organized Tuesday's demonstration.

As part of a protest against the brutality of the security services towards demonstrators, residents of the capital Belgrade blocked one of the city's main communication hubs.

Demonstrations in Serbia have been going on for over a year. “Demonstrators accuse the government”

The current protests in Serbia are part of a wave of demonstrations that have been ongoing for 15 months, starting after part of the roof of the Novi Sad railway station collapsed in November 2024. 16 people died in the accident. Demonstrators accuse the authorities of corruption and negligence, which, in their opinion, led to the tragedy. They demand that those responsible for the accident be held accountable and, from May last year, that early elections be called.
