PNL MP Robert Sighiartău, a member of the party's Executive Office, accused the PSD of not respecting the government program or the agreements in the coalition, which the liberal believes can no longer function in this way.
On Monday evening, the leader of the PSD conditioned the support of the liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan on the budget for 2026. In an intervention on Tuesday on Antena 3, Robert Sighiartău criticized the threats launched by Sorin Grindeanu.
“As seen every day, the Social Democratic Party not only does not respect the governing program, but also does not respect the agreements in the coalition (…) and I already see that there are threats to the budget, that if the budget is not what Mr. Grindeanu wants, then he must vote against it and Mr. Bolojan must leave. I don't think that the coalition can work like this anymore,” declared the PNL deputy.
He accused the PSD of blocking spending cuts and reforms desired by the PNL.
“If we cannot implement these measures because the Social Democratic Party does not want this, then our role in this coalition no longer exists (…). If we will not be able to move forward with these measures, then we have a problem, because we cannot implement our policies”, continued Robert Sighiartău.
The liberal claims that “from morning to night the Prime Minister of Romania is torpedoed”, and “reforms are blocked and sabotaged within the Government”.
“We will have to make a decision, make an assessment. After the budget passes, after we see how this whole mess ends, we will have to see if for the benefit of Romania and the National Liberal Party, under these conditions, we can still function,” PNL deputy Robert Sighiartău also declared.
What Sorin Grindeanu had said
The PSD president declared, on Monday evening, on Romania TV, that the support of the social democrats for the liberal prime minister Ilie Bolojan will “very much depend” on the budget for 2026 and the priorities that will be agreed upon.
“These messianic accents do not impress me. I do not play in this book, so to speak, “Genesis, according to Bolojan”. We are interested in some simple things now, the economic revival, the investment money, the solidarity package. If these things pass, then we will have a budget and then we will still have a prime minister. If we start again with discussions and all kinds of news based on sources, then we will not have a budget and we will withdraw the trust of the prime minister”, he said PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu.
