Rubio drew attention to the importance of American mediation in the war in Ukraine and its dire consequences.
“We view the role of the United States as an attempt to help end a very deadly, very bloody and very expensive war with terrible suffering. What is happening now in Kyiv is terrible. People are left without power during the coldest period of the year. There is nothing positive about this. The death toll, regardless of the numbers on both sides, is too high,” Rubio said.
He added that US President Donald Trump had been trying for a year to find out whether Washington could mediate negotiations to end the war.
Following a meeting with the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) countries on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on February 14, Rubio assured that the United States will continue to negotiate to end the war in Ukraine.
Context
Rubio, during a speech at the Munich Security Conference, said that the United States is not confident in the seriousness of the Russian Federation’s intentions to end the war against Ukraine. He also noted that in the event of a threat to the West, the United States is “ready to act independently,” but prefers and hopes to do this together with Europe.
On the evening of February 14, Rubio met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. According to the head of the Ukrainian state, he and Rubio discussed in detail the diplomatic process and trilateral meetings of the delegations of the United States, Ukraine and the aggressor country of the Russian Federation to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian war.
