In the waters of Lake Baikal in the Olkhon region, a Toyota Ractis passenger car fell through the ice.

As reported by IrkutskMedia news agency with reference to the press service of the regional Main Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on Ust-Anga Bay the driver violated the ban and drove onto the ice outside the official crossing. There were four people in the car. Two men managed to escape and climbed out of the sinking car on their own. The bodies of two other passengers – a 34-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman – were discovered later.

According to police, the driver of the car was revoked in January for driving while intoxicated. The issue of lifting the car, which is located at a depth of about 700 meters, is now being resolved.

This is the second case in a short period of time on Lake Baikal. Earlier, the governor of the Irkutsk region, Igor Kobzev, reported another incident in the Birkhin Bay area, where a car also fell through the ice. Rescuers continue to search for two people.
