Narges Mohammadi, winner of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, has been sentenced by an Iranian court to six years in prison, her lawyer told AFP on Sunday.
“She was sentenced to six years in prison for assembly and complicity in the commission of crimes,” Mostafa Nili said. He said Mohammadi also received a sentence of “a year and a half for propaganda and a two-year travel ban,” according to The Guardian.
Iranian law provides that prison sentences run concurrently.
The lawyer hopes that given Mohammadi's health problems, the activist could be “temporarily released on bail to receive treatment.”
Nili said the court's decision is not final and can be appealed.
Over the past quarter century, Mohammadi has been repeatedly tried and imprisoned in Iran for her campaigns against capital punishment and a mandatory dress code for women.
She has not seen her children since 2015
She has spent much of the past decade behind bars and has not seen her twin children, who live in Paris, since 2015.
Even behind bars, the Nobel laureate did not give up on her causes, organizing protests in the prison yard and going on hunger strike.
In 2023, when she won the Nobel Prize, mainly for campaigning against capital punishment, the award was picked up by her children, as Mohammadi was in prison.
Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, say Iranian authorities carry out more executions annually than any other country – no reliable figures are available for China.
