Russia has attacked critical energy infrastructure in western Ukraine using cruise missiles and kamikaze drones.

On the night of February 6-7, Russian forces launched more than 400 drones and about 40 missiles of various types in almost all regions of the country, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced.

Ukrainian air defense units destroyed 24 Kalibr and Kh-101 cruise missiles, as well as 65 Shahed drones.

Russia hit the electricity production and distribution systems, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denis Shmihal announced on Saturday, quoted by Reuters.

“Russian criminals have carried out yet another massive attack on Ukraine's energy facilities. The attack continues. Energy workers are ready to begin repairs as soon as the security situation allows”he sent on Telegram on Saturday morning, adding that emergency power cuts were operated throughout the country.

Zelensky wrote on X that the main targets were “energy network, generation facilities and distribution substations”, in Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk, Lviv and Rivne regions, but also in Kyiv and Kharkiv regions.

“Last night, the Russians also attacked facilities vital to the operation of nuclear power plants. This is a danger for Ukraine and for our entire region, for Europe.”

“Today, units at our nuclear power plants are at reduced output, and one has shut down automatically. It's a level of attack that no terrorist in the world has ever allowed.”

According to Shmihal, the Russian attacks hit the Burstinska and Dobrotvirska power plants in western Ukraine, and Kiev requested emergency assistance from neighboring Poland.

The attacks on western Ukraine led to the deployment of Polish military aviation to protect Poland's airspace, which was not violated

Two airports in southeastern Poland temporarily suspended flights on Saturday following the attacks.

Rzeszow and Lublin are close to the border with Ukraine, with Rzeszów being the main NATO hub for the supply of arms to Ukraine.
