Folk calendar
Aksinya day, Ksenia – half-winter.
On this day they commemorated Xenia of Milas, a Christian saint who lived in the 5th century, revered by the Orthodox Church in the ranks of the venerables.
As the old people noted, in the northern provinces Aksinya’s day was the middle of winter, hence the nickname of the saint. Also, by this time exactly half of the bread supply should have been eaten. People said: “Half-winter in half, but it doesn’t divide the winter evenly – it’s harder for the peasant by spring.”
There were “economic” signs for this day: people carefully studied the prices of bread. If grain becomes cheaper on the market, it means there will be a good harvest. They also said that if the price for half-bread (another name for the day) is low, then it will not rise to new bread.
There were other methods of fortune telling. In the northern regions, the loaf was weighed in the evening and the next morning. If the weight of bread decreases overnight, then its price will decrease – and vice versa. In the south they did things a little differently: they also left rye bread overnight and looked at it in the morning. If there seems to be more grain than there was, a good harvest was expected in the summer.
Aksinya's day was also called the spring indicator. It was believed that the weather of this day corresponded to the weather of the entire spring.
