US President Donald Trump said on board Air Force One on Saturday that the US response to a trade deal between Canada and China will be “considerable”.
“If they make a deal with China, we're going to do something substantial,” Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.
“We don't want China to take over Canada. And if they do the deal that they're after, China will take over Canada,” Trump added.
Donald Trump said last week he would impose 100% tariffs on Canada if Ottawa struck a trade deal with Beijing.
Relations between Washington and Ottawa have worsened since Trump's return to the White House. The president's decision to raise tariffs on Canadian goods sparked outrage, and many Canadians chose to boycott American products and avoid travel to the US.
Canada, which has historically directed much of its trade south to the US, has responded with an attempt to increase trade relations east to Europe and west to Asia.
